Do you love hitting the gym? (::crickets::) Maybe not. To help with that motivation issue, I love mixing up my fitness routine with fun and unique workouts throughout Philadelphia. Here are a few of my favorites.
Free Yoga at Race Street Pier
Practice your best downward facing dog, tree pose and warrior pose along the waterfront at Race Street Pier. With the Ben Franklin Bridge as the backdrop, there’s no better yoga setting in the city (and it’s free!). Are you an experienced yogi or a beginner in search of a cool fitness class? Either way, all levels are welcome as the instructor offers modified positions for most poses. Check out their schedule here. Namaste.
Indego Bike Rentals
This is one of my favorite fitness features the city offers. Pick up a bike from one of Indego’s 100+ stations, ride it to wherever you’d like for as long as you’d like, then drop it off at any one of its stations when you’re finished. There’s a station at Race Street Pier, so you can grab a bike after yoga and continue your fitness-filled day! Pay per ride or monthly passes are available.
I don’t love to run, but running alongside the river with incredible views of the Philly skyline isn’t so bad. Check out Kelly Drive, which is one of the city’s most popular paths near the Philadelphia Museum of Art that winds along Boathouse Row. The Kelly Drive loop is just over 8 miles.
Looking for a shorter route? Run the pedestrian walkway of the Ben Franklin Bridge, which begins at 5th & Race Streets. Run over the Delaware River with the skyline behind you. Once you reach the other side, turn around and run back to where you started for about 3 miles roundtrip.
There are too many great running paths to write about, but these two are a great start. There are also countless 5K, 10K, and 10-mile races to join. And if you’re a far better runner than I am, spend this summer training for the Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon this September!
Enjoy getting fit while exploring Philly!
