The Bahamas is filled with opportunities to explore the sun and sand. And there are so many ways to see the world, from exploring on your own to exploring via a cruise with its own islands. One fun way to explore is through the national parks of the area.
And Clifton Heritage National Park gleams out from southwestern New Providence, Bahamas like a rough emerald embedded in a great source rock. Ribboned with board walks and nature trails for those desiring a quiet commune with the environment, it’s no wonder this beautiful ‘off the beaten path’ park is a favorite of locals.
The Clifton Heritage Authority established the park as a safeguard for natural and historic Bahamian resources, including coastal wetlands. Those wetlands draw the wading and seabirds well-beloved by birdwatchers. In fact, the area is so nurturing for wild flocks, the brown noddy and the bridled and sooty terns nest in Goulding Cay, only three miles from the park.
Like lovely puddles left by a persistent rain, historical ruins dot the 208-acre park. Lucayan villages thrived on the beaches more than 500 years ago, and in the late 1700s Loyalists left America to clear ground and construct cotton plantations in the area. In that same period, until the early 1800s, both free and enslaved Africans lived here.
In addition to the heritage sites, caves, nature trails, and fascinating ecosystem, you can visit the nearby Jaws Beach, where they filmed the sequel to the original Jaws in 1987! After that–if you still want to go into the water–there’s a very special underwater attraction constructed by artists in the clear water just off the Clifton coast. The Sir Nicholas Nuttall Coral Reef Sculpture Garden, curated by the Bahamas Reef Environment Education Foundation (BREEF), serves to draw tourists from damaging the nearby natural reefs.
Like to snorkel? The area teems with the aforementioned reefs, shipwrecks, tropical fish, and sea life that sometimes come over to explore your snorkel mask and fins.
The Clifton Heritage National Park and adjacent ocean provide a tranquil, breathtaking location to spend your vacation. The park is open during the week from 9 AM to 5 PM. It’s closed on weekends to prevent a flood of weekend visitors from stressing the flora and fauna.
