Summer is here! We Bostonian’s wait patiently during the treacherous winter months, counting down the days to summer. Once the temperatures start to rise, more outdoor activities become available and the waiting finally pays off. In fact, Boston offers so many activities for families, kids, and outdoor enthusiasts that it can be hard to know where to start. Here are some of the best outdoor summer activities we recommend trying on your next trip to Boston.
For the Adventurist
Blue Hill Reservation is perfect for those outdoor enthusiasts. Located in Milton, MA, this hiking trail is just minutes from Boston. This reservation offers over 20 miles of hiking trails. We’re not saying you have to walk all of it, but Great Blue Hill stands at 635 feet tall with spectacular views of the city. If you are up for it, the 9-mile hike will take you from one side of the hill range to the other and should take about 4 to 6 hours. If you prefer to bike, then Cutler Park Needham/ Newton offers 9 miles of biking trails. These trails are located on the outskirts of the city west of Fenway Park and are easy for all skill levels.

A Stroll in the Park
Summer time is the perfect opportunity to see the oldest park in the U.S.! Boston Common was built back in 1634 and is located in the middle of the city; just steps away from Loews Boston. Next to the Commons are the Public Gardens, which were built in 1837. Both of these, which are located next to each other, offer beautiful views of the city. The parks are both home to hundreds of plants and trees, which make for a cool, shady stroll. And, as you explore the 74 acres, you will see the parks come to life with dogs playing, people enjoying summer picnics, and kids running around enjoying their summer vacation. In other words, these Boston parks are a must-visit.

Summer Tours
Since summer is here, the ferries are open and we can’t think of a better way to see the city than from the water. Take one of Boston’s ferries to any of the Harbor Islands; you can catch the ferry at the Long Wharf near Faneuil Hall. We recommend heading over to Georges Island to explore Fort Warren. There, you can take tours of the old forth that defended Boston up until WWII. Another beautiful island to explore is Spectacle Island, where you can go on hikes or relax on the beach. If you’re on the more adventurous side, there are even islands that allow camping.
