Atlanta has not always been where I call home. I was born in the great city of Chicago and until recent years, considered it home. Growing up, Atlanta was nothing more than a school field-trip destination or the occasional Braves or Falcons game. However, I’ve seen Atlanta transform from a business destination to a city rich in culture, pride and soul.
An excellent place to view evidence of this transformation is the Atlanta BeltLine, where countless artists have expressed their souls. Located steps from Loews Atlanta, the Eastside Trail entrance can be found directly off of the picturesque Piedmont Park. Whether you’re looking to get your daily steps in, taste all the food you see along the way, or snap photos all day, the Eastside Trail is an ideal way to explore the culture of Atlanta.
For the Outdoorsy
As an extension of Piedmont Park, The BeltLine is a great way to keep you moving, whether you prefer to explore by foot, bike or skateboard. The Eastside Trail is around 2 miles long (4 miles round-trip) with even paths and fun sights to see along the way.
Have kids who need to release energy? You’re on the right trail. The BeltLine passes Old Fourth Ward Skate Park, co-funded by skateboarding legend Tony Hawk. Coupled with nearby playgrounds and splash pads, it’s entertaining for all ages.
For the Foodies
If you get hungry along the way, you’re in luck. Ponce City Market, located off the BeltLine, has countless options for food and drinks. A personal favorite is W.H. Stiles Fish Camp, where you can bite into a Crispy Shrimp Po’Boy. The atmosphere is cool and easy-going (hey, just like Atlanta). If you’re looking to beat the summer heat, don’t forget to grab a popsicle at King of Pops. These pops are suitable for all ages, with many unique flavors sure to please any picky eater.
For the Art Lovers
With more photo-ops here than you may have phone storage for, a camera is a must. Along your path, you can find murals, art displays and installations. This charm is one of my favorite highlights of the BeltLine. Why not experience local art while getting exercise in? I always enjoy coming back to the trail to see the displays evolve. What was there yesterday may not be what is there today. Which speaks to Atlanta’s ever-growing culture and the beauty of travel, even in your own town.
