Concannon Petite Sirah San Francisco Bay Review

Petite Sirah-it’s an interesting beast to be sure.  This isn’t the tannic monster that it can be at times.  Here’s some more information on Concannon Vineyard and their Petite Sirah from the San Francisco Bay AVA

Hi guys, Mark Aselstine with Uncorked Ventures. I’ll hold this up so you can get a good look at it. This is a Concannon Vineyard Petite Sirah, and if you look at the very bottom, you’ll see an AVA that you’ve probably never seen before in a wine label. It’s the San Francisco Bay AVA. Excuse me, so San Francisco Bay AVA, I thought it was worthwhile to chat about for a second. This includes the counties directly around the city and county of San Francisco which are one and the same. It does include Livermore, but it does not include anything in the North Bay, Napa and Sonoma, which is what you typically think of wine regions. It does go a little bit south, but it does not include the Santa Cruz Mountains, so the San Francisco Bay AVA, there’s kind of these tiers of AVAs in the state of California, so first you have the state of California. Next on this section you have the Central Coast AVA, which is literally half the state, and then you have the San Francisco Bay AVA, and then within the San Francisco Bay AVA, you have six or seven different choices, one of them being Livermore.

I don’t know where the grapes came from exactly, although we do know that it’s at least part of the Central Coast AVA and part of the San Francisco Bay, and then you don’t know which of the smaller ones it came from if any, but I just thought it was interesting. Concannon does a few things that are pretty unique. This Petite Sirah is kind of really a well put together bottle of wine for about 15 bucks or so. I’ve talked about the vineyard before. They’re on their fourth generation of ownership out in Livermore, and they’re really one of the guys who really stand the most to benefit from Livermore’s growing appetite for wine as far as a region but then also their growing ability to sell wine to the rest of the country and make a name for themselves. We did a Steven Kent wine in my Reserve Wine Club last month. The reviews were very good from customers, and so I think you’re going to see more of Livermore put out there, and we’re going to continue to see more Livermore quite honestly in our wine clubs, but then you’re going to see people accept Livermore as part of the wider wine industry in the Bay Area as time goes on.

In any case, I hope everyone is having a nice start to the week so far. Mark Aselstine with Uncorked Ventures, and if you’re not familiar with Petite Sirah, it was literally created, and it’s also called Durif, it was created in the lab in France hundred or so years ago. That’s where all grapes are born these days, and it’s kind of this thick, inky, dense, tannic beast of a wine, and people have long kind of shooed away from Petite Sirah for those reasons, but if you get it from somewhere with a little bit of a cooler temperature or a lighter hand winemaking style, whole cluster fermentation also helps, you can get something that’s pretty unique and pretty interesting.
