The Boston Marathon is the longest-running marathon in the United States — no pun intended! Back in 1897, the first Boston Marathon began with 18 participants and was inspired by the success of the first Olympic marathon in 1896. Today, the event gathers crowds of over 30,000 participants and 500,000 spectators, not including those watching on TV.  Whether participating or spectating, we have some tips on making this year’s 121st Annual Boston Marathon the best yet.

Start of the Race
There are a few locations ideal for soaking up the action of the start of the race. The starting line in Hopkinton, at the intersection of East Main Street and Grove Street, is our pick. The race begins with the first wave at 9:15 AM and the last at 11:15 AM. Make sure to get there early to grab yourself the perfect spot. Another location that is full of energy is Waverly Street and West Central Street in Framingham. At miles 6 to 8, this is where the top athletes will start to emerge and the competition will heat up…

Mid-Race
The Wellesley Screaming Tunnel is next! For decades this is has been THE spot to visit for the middle of the race. Located from miles 12–16, the Scream Tunnel is where the marathon takes a detour through Wellesley College. Back in the early 70s, runners would be cheered on by the college students receiving kisses for good luck. Today, the tradition lives on. Legend has it that the cheering gets so loud here that runners can hear it from over half a mile away.

Mile 26.2- The End!
If you couldn’t make it to the start of the race, the finish line is the next best thing. The finish line is located on Boylston between Exeter Street and Dartmouth. It will be jam-packed with screaming supporters and news crews. If you’ve decided not to make the trek out to the starting line, grabbing a seat here before the start of the race is a solid, strategic move. There are plenty of bars and restaurants in the area, and after the race there are plenty of events and parties to hit up all over the Back Bay.
