Charleston’s Barrier Islands

Charleston really does have it all.

Historic homes and sites, magnificent gardens, stunning architecture, incredible food, a thriving arts community, and more. And, don’t forget the beautiful beaches too!

It’s all part of what makes Charleston such a special destination.

But, just outside the city lies a different treasure.

Charleston's Barrier Islands

Charleston’s Barrier Islands

Right off the Isle of Palms, on the coast just south of Charleston, lie several beautiful barrier islands still largely in their natural state. In the spaces between are intracoastal waterways, tidal creeks, and salt marshes teeming with wildlife.

Wildlife Abounds

A wide variety of wildlife calls this area home.

From the dolphins that frequently appear in these waters frolicking and diving.

Sea turtles come here to nest in the summer months, and it’s possible to see the young hatchlings make their way from the nests on the beach to their lives in the ocean.

Blue crabs are abundant, and visitors can even experience a traditional crabbing adventure, complete with a big crab feast at the end.

The variety of bird species is spectacular, making Charleston’s barrier islands an absolute birders paradise. And if you look carefully, you are likely to see osprey, egrets, and eagles.

And then there’s the fishing. Also fantastic, both group and private fishing charters are available.

The Beaches…need we say more?

The beaches themselves are quite lovely in their natural state.

Here you will find no condos, big hotels, or even vacation homes. Just sand, seagrass, and seashells. A few small buildings are available for hosting events or beach barbecues. A big bonfire on the beach with a bowl of low country boil up and a few fresh-roasted oysters will complement your Charleston vacation perfectly.

We have several Charleston tours available for your custom pre-formed groups. Check them out here. Find one you love? Contact us today!
