Along the Saint Croix River

Mark Twain appreciated the beauty of the Mississippi River valley like no other. He described it “as reposeful as a dreamland, nothing worldly about it… nothing to hang a fret or worry upon.” And the Saint Croix River town of Stillwater won’t disappoint!Saint Croix River |

Experience a simpler time with a river cruise down the Saint Croix, as you embark from beautiful Stillwater, Minnesota. And with many cruises including lunch or dinner, you won’t go hungry. In fact, some even have live bands playing Jazz. And, if you time it right, you will even have the opportunity to see the leaves changing colors as the Midwest Summer transforms into Autumn.

But, if you are more of a landlubber, you can enjoy the beauty of the Saint Croix. As a result of it serving as the dividing line between Minnesota and Wisconsin, many Stillwater restaurants offer a spectacular river view.

The Freight House has a large patio with lots of shade, thanks to a plentiful supply of umbrellas. A bar right on the deck offers daily happy hours, which you’re sure to fall in love with. Plus, since it’s set in an old freight house, it is on the National Registry of Historic places and a stop on the Historic Downtown Stillwater Trolley Tour.

Prefer something right on the water? Then you may want to visit The Dock Café. You’ll find out first-hand why it’s a local favorite for romantic dinners and special occasions. And, it also boasts a menu brimming with fresh seafood including Minnesota specialty, Panko crusted Walleye.  Dine inside or on the patio while enjoying the view of the famous Stillwater Lift Bridge along with your meal.

Be sure to save time to wander the antique shops that Stillwater is famous for. Get lost in time in the Midtown Antique Mall (housing 65 dealers on three retail floors) or the more intimate River City Antiques, to name a few.

And, with a US Post Office a few blocks away from Main Street (the location of most of the antique stores), you can ship many of your purchases directly home, quite easily!

No trip into the simpler times of yesteryear would be complete without a stop at Leo’s Grill and Malt Shop. Take advantage of the convenient walk-up window to order one of over twenty-five malt flavors. In addition, they even have root beer floats to satisfy your sweet tooth!

Enjoy the Natural Treasure of the Saint Croix River AND also the man-made treats that Stillwater, Minnesota has to offer!
