From a young age, I’ve been an adventurous eater. Though my mom’s definition of courageous was diving into the Sweet ‘n Sour Chicken at our neighborhood Chinese restaurant, my dad always encouraged me to try anything I could get my hands on, even if I had no idea what it was. I’ll never forget the excitement when I called my parents to tell them their 13-year-old had just sucked down some snails and loved them! So, as you can imagine, I’m as interested as any foodie can be in hearing about Nashville’s hottest new restaurants.
I’ve spent almost a year with the Loews Vanderbilt team and I am enthralled to have met my match. Kristin Story, Director of Human Resources, is as witty as she is passionate about Nashville’s culinary scene. “If eating were a sport, I’d be a professional athlete”, she joked. “I never cook, ever.” One can go out in Nashville for every meal and never get bored. The food scene is always evolving and attracting new culinary talent into the Music city. Cuisine in Nashville is not your stereotypical southern cuisine anymore.
With restaurants opening weekly, we asked Kristin to share her favorite establishments for brunch, dinner and cocktails. Her top choices include:

Neighborhood: The Gulch
- Favorite Dish: It is an ever-changing menu but when I see the scallops with black BBQ and fried leeks it is a must. The congee is a close second, and a favorite with my friends to share.
- Fun Fact: This started as a cool pop-up restaurant in East Nashville that garnered city-wide attention. With this new location in the Gulch, they have stepped up their game even more and it stands out as one of the most unique menus in the Gulch.
Cocktails at Old Glory
Neighborhood: Edgehill
- Favorite Dish: My favorite thing to do here is tell them what I like and let them get creative. They’ve never served me a cocktail I didn’t love. The menu can be eclectic (the first time I went, someone ordered a cocktail with beets in it — no joke) but the cool architecture and industrial vibe is too cool to miss.
- Fun Fact: You’ll get a true speakeasy feel navigating to this bar. Walking down the narrow back alley behind Barcelona, you could easily miss your mark. I almost couldn’t find it the first time I went. With no signage, one must know to look for the triangle door. Once inside, it is an amazing space.
Brunch at Urban Grub
Neighborhood: 12 South
- Favorite Dish: Being a devout seafood lover, I’m in my true happy place if an opportunity arises to combine it with brunch. The seafood and charcuterie bar served during Saturday and Sunday brunch is out of this world. On my plate, you will typically find raw oysters, crab legs, house cured bacon, prosciutto and as much cheese as my plate physically allows.
- Fun Fact: Urban Grub makes an impressive variety of items in-house. I recently hosted a party there and had the opportunity to tour their curing room, vintage pasta machine and vast meat pantry. It was super impressive!
No matter where you travel, always leave time to explore the local culinary scene. I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to try out these restaurants the next time I visit. Whether you’re an adventurous eater like Dad or conservative like Mom, Music City’s restaurant scene is sure to serenade you.
