5 Wonderful Places to Wander for Boston History

#XperienceTravelTheTaylorWay

America has some rich history, but did you know it all started here in Boston? Purists from England sailed over seas and landed at Plymouth Rock to create the first establishment in 1620. Then shortly after, Massachusetts Bay was colonized in 1628 which then became Boston, MA. Everywhere in Boston there is history surrounding you. Even while you relax in our Apothecary Lounge, drinking your morning coffee while enjoying the news here at Loews Boston; you are sitting in the former Boston Police Headquarters! We chose 5 places to wander to on your vacation to soak up some Boston history and culture.

Harvard University

Many greats have walked this campus, like Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who graduated in 1900, and Barack Obama, who graduated in 1988. This campus speaks through its architecture and history. You can learn endless amounts of information by taking a tour with a Harvard student — find them at the Harvard Information Center in the Smith Campus Center.

Fort Warren

This Stone and Granite fort stationed at the entrance of the Harbor was completed in 1861. The sole purpose of this fort was to defend Boston against attacks during the Civil War up to World War II. In 1970 it was deemed a masterpiece in coastal engineering. Now, tourists are able to take the ferry out to George’s Island and explore this historic piece of architecture. Wandering around the fort is a great way to spend an afternoon as you absorb America’s history.

Old State House

This is the oldest surviving public building in Boston. The building was constructed to house the seat of the Massachusetts General Court, where they drafted and created laws for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Up until 1798, many laws were passed here for the betterment of the colony. Now you can wander into the museum and discover what life was like back in the 18th century.

Boston Common

On a beautiful day, there’s nothing like a walk through the oldest public park in America. Boston Common was founded in 1634 and is home to dozens and dozens of trees and flowers. The same architect who designed this park later went on to design Central Park in New York City. It’s a great place to soak up the sun and stunning views of downtown Boston.

North End Boston

Wander on over to Boston’s historic North End, the oldest residential neighborhood in Boston dating back to the 1630s. One of the most famous robberies in the city took place here; ever heard of the Brink’s Job? Over $27 million in today’s numbers were stolen back in 1950. Walk through the streets in this area and you can feel the history all around you.
