The dwindling days of summer aren’t usually a cause for celebration, but in New York, late summer signals the start of one of the most exciting times of the year in NYC — the US Open. With the tournament set to kick off on August 28, we stole a few minutes with Great Britain’s Johanna Konta, currently ranked number seven in women’s singles tennis, to find out how she prepares for the action, and how she spends time in New York when not on the court.

You’ve played in a number of US Opens before. What do you like most about this tournament?
I love coming to New York – the city has so much energy and the crowd brings that to the court at Flushing Meadows. There’s nothing quite like the night session in New York! I also like adventuring to find new restaurants I like in the city.
Do you have any inside scoop on players to watch in this year’s tournament (other than yourself)?
The women’s game is so deep at the moment, every match is an interesting battle. I’d say Elina Svitolina and Garbiñe Muguruza will do well and they’re very entertaining to watch. Obviously Venus is playing in front of a home crowd, which will no doubt be electric, as I’m sure it will be for Madison Keys’ matches too.
Do you travel with a large entourage of family and friends?
I have my team, so 6 of us — 7 if you include me! My Dad was with me in Toronto, which was nice, and my boyfriend is joining for the start of the Open.
Can you share any tips for spectators coming to the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center for the day?
I’d say make sure you bring sunscreen and hydrate because it can get very warm. And soak up as much of the atmosphere as you can!
How do you spend time in NYC prior to the tournament?
This year I will have been in the city for almost a week before my first match. I will be training and getting used to the courts / environment, eating (ha ha) and if I have the energy I may do a spot of shopping. It’s important to rest up before a long 2-week Grand Slam so I’ll also be spending some nice down time at the lovely Loews Regency Hotel, where I have the most incredible room!
What is your favorite way to unwind in NYC after a match?
As most people know, NYC is not necessarily a place of “unwinding.” I like to spend time in the hotel, maybe watch some TV and enjoy a bit of quiet time.
How do you celebrate the end of the Open?
We’ll go out for a team meal, probably to one of the restaurants I’ve tried and fallen in love with during the tournament (and probably gone back to almost every night!)
Where do you shop in NYC? Where do you recommend for tennis gear or active wear?
It’s impossible to name a favorite place, but of course taking in Fifth Ave is always an experience. Obviously [I’m going to suggest] heading into the ASICS store in NYC to get the latest tennis collection that I’ll be wearing. [Konta has a sponsorship deal with ASICS.]
Do you have any other NYC must-visits?
Get to Central Park!
What are your travel essentials?
I always wear comfy, stretchy active wear with my ASCISÂ compression socks to prevent swelling when in the air. I also always pack a Nature Valley bar for an on-the-go snack, drink tons of water, and moisturize regularly.
