When the weather heats up, Boston has plenty of opportunities for fun in and on the water. Fun fact time: before a landfill project started in 1857, the Back Bay area of Boston was a 570-acre body of water! You will see water no matter where you go in Boston, along with bridges and tunnels to help with navigating the city. To get to and from the airport here, cars travel through the deepest tunnel in America, traveling under the harbor at depths that reach 90 feet! Of course, the best way to experience the water is to be in it or on it. With summer upon us, we have a few ways you can enjoy doing just that.
The Charles River
This 80-mile long body of water flows from Hopkinton to the Harbor and is mostly referred to as “The Charles.” If you are the outdoors type and love being close to the water, then you may want to utilize a kayak or canoe for an adventure down The Charles. If you don’t have your own, don’t worry: Head to Artesani Park off Soldiers Field, where you can rent small kayaks. The river is quite long, so don’t forget to pack water and bring a snack!
If slow and steady doesn’t float your boat; then try Codzilla. This 70-foot long, 2,800-horsepower speed boat will give you the ride of a lifetime! This is sightseeing taken to a whole new level. Codzilla boards at the Longwharf and tours the harbor with speeds over 40 miles per hour. If this isn’t exciting enough, this power boat can turn on a dime, making it a thrilling experience.
Boston Harbor Cruises
If you are not looking to speed across the harbor, then you may want to try a more relaxing cruise. Boston Harbor Cruises offers several other experiences out on the water. The one we recommend is the Sunset cruise. This cruise departs at 7 PM every day and will last about 90 minutes, sailing to the inner harbor while revealing historic sights and one of the oldest lighthouses in Boston. The cruise ends back out on the harbor, where you can watch the beautiful sunset over the city skyline.
