Chocolate walnut.

Peanut butter.

Maple.

Whatever your favorite flavor of fudge might be, just thinking about it is enough to make your mouth water and your taste buds tingle. The thought may evoke happy memories of childhood, when your grandparents created this heavenly treat.

Now, you can revisit childhood by tasting fudge made the old-fashioned way on our upcoming tour to the Great Lakes Bay and Mackinac Island. Or, for a SpecTAPular event – check out our Great Gatsby Getaway – filled with 3 days of special events celebrating the Golden Age of hot jazz, flapper fashion, and dancing the night away. And, with plenty of free time, you can check out the options for fudge too!

A uniquely American confection.

No one knows who invented it, but most agree that it was probably the happy result of a cooking accident. It first appeared on Mackinac Island in 1887, when a sail maker’s wife opened a candy shop in front of her husband’s establishment.

Today, that shop is still concocting fudge using its “secret” recipe, and is just one of a dozen or more fudge purveyors on the island.

What makes Mackinac Island fudge special?

It could be the ingredients, as most fudge masters use the freshest cream, butter, fruits, nuts and flavorings. Some say it’s magic. Others point to the way the hot fudge is artfully worked with paddles on a marble slab until it cools. This gives Mackinac Island fudge a particularly light and creamy texture.

Most people (and those on our tour) reach Mackinac Island by ferry. As they exit the boat, the sweet scent of fudge is easily detectable as it permeates the air. It doesn’t take long for visitors to realize that one of the tastiest activities on the island is to stroll between fudge shops, stopping for a free sample at each one. A few of the shops you might include on your tour are Joann’s Fudge, Murdick’s Fudge and Ryba’s.

Don’t miss your chance to try America’s best fudge. Treat yourself to a trip to Mackinac Island, the Fudge Capital of the U.S. Contact us for more information.
