Washington DC is home to some momentous events- parades, marches, inaugurations and galas for the rich and famous. But every year, its most beloved event is one that invites residents and visitors alike to celebrate incredible natural beauty and welcome spring after a long winter.
This year, you are invited to the historic streets of Washington DC to celebrate the annual Cherry Blossom Festival!
It began in 1912 when Yukio Ozaki, then mayor of Tokyo, gifted 3000 beautiful cherry trees to the United States Capital as a symbol or friendship and alliance between the two countries. (Check out this other post for more information!)
Throughout the years, the celebration has grown- as have the trees- and the nearly month-long celebration includes a packed schedule of events almost every day including live concerts by world-class performers (March 25th- April 9th), a kite festival (April 1st), the Cherry Blossom parade (April 8th), fireworks, street performers and more.
Do you just want to soak in the blooms? There are so many possibilities for long walks among the rare and beautiful flowers while surround by national monuments in the mild weather of Spring in the Mid-Atlantic region.
Want to know about the blossoms? Much like the fall colors of the Appalachians, the cherry blossoms are affected by the temperature and moisture of the winter, and how quickly the warmth of spring finds its way back into the world. Want to see the festival first-hand? Be sure to book your tour today to be a part of it: this festival can pack the whole town!
